The Atlanta Braves have signed 17-year veteran pitcher Carlos Carrasco to a minor-league deal, assigning him to the Gwinnett Stripers in Triple-A.
This move comes just hours before the Braves played the San Francisco Giants in the second game of their three-game series, which they won 1-3 on June 27.
The Braves had previously DFA'd Carrasco five times this season, with him electing free agency each time before re-signing with the team a day or so later.
Carrasco has a 0-0 record with a 3.68 ERA in 7 games over 14.2 innings for the Braves this season.
Braves manager Walt Weiss had kind words for Carrasco, saying "Cookie's unbelievable, we love having him here… He's as good as it gets."
Carrasco has shifted into a bullpen role at age 39 and has done it effectively, with the Braves using him to give their pitching staff fresh arms.
The Braves are trying to figure out their rotation ahead of the August 3 MLB trade deadline, with Reynaldo López and Hurston Waldrep competing for a spot.
Weiss said "I'm still not sure what we're going to do moving forward with these guys, Lopez and Waldrep, we'll get together on those things."
The Braves are currently 49-31, standing 3rd in the National League, and are four games up on the Philadelphia Phillies for the top spot in the NL East.
Carrasco's experience and ability to pitch effectively out of the bullpen make him a valuable asset to the Braves.
The Braves' pitching staff has been performing well, and the addition of Carrasco will provide them with more depth and options.
